Learning the Semantics of Aspect. This book presents a cognitive semantic model of what the whole range of functions is that English and German discourse particles can fulfil, how these Author: Gabriele Scheler. On the Syntax and Semantics of (Relative) Pronouns and Determiners Article (PDF Available) in Journal of Comparative Germanic Linguistics 2(2) Author: Martina Wiltschko.

The author develops a semantic metalanguage based on lexical universals or near-universals (and, ultimately, on a system of universal semantic . In this book, three frameworks for studying the semantics of compounding are presented by their initiators: Jackendoff's Parallel Architecture, Lieber's theory of lexical semantics, and Štekauer's onomasiological theory. Common to these presentations .

The meaning of the new word cannot easily be predicted on the basis of its constituent parts. This book presents three frameworks that give insights into the factors that contribute to the semantics of compounds in various : Hardcover. It is proposed that languages may vary in what they let their NPs denote. In some languages (like Chinese), NPs are argumental (names of kinds) and can thus occur freely without determiner in argument position; in others they are predicates (Romance), and this prevents NPs from occurring as arguments, unless the category D(eterminer) is by:

A strict correlation between the syntax and semantics of determiners is proposed: if an article occupies D, it is context sensitive. Conversely, articles that do not occupy D are not context sensitive. This book also explores determiner systems in other Salish languages. Deixis is a part of most of the Salish determiner systems.

The Semantics of Determiners xiii whereas bare nouns cannot be. I propose there is a strict correlation between the syntax and semantics: if a determiner occupies D, it has domain restriction in its representation. It wasn’t until I was reworking the dissertation that I realized that someone had said something very similar about the as I do here.

In this thesis, I investigate the properties of determiners in Sk̲wx̲wú7mesh (Squamish) Salish. Determiners in Sk̲wx̲wú7mesh behave significantly differently from the definite determiner “the” in English. Sk̲wx̲wú7mesh lacks a definite/indefiniteness distinction; all DPs can be used in both familiar and novel contexts, and are not required to refer to a unique entity.

Instead. Ion pleacă. Here the subject functions as the argument of the predicate. Under the above assumptions we get the following intuitively pleasing result: the denotation of (13a) is 1 just in case the entity denoted by the subject is in the denotation of the property denoted by the intransitive verb.

It was Martin Atkinson, a fellow research assistant on an Edinburgh University Linguistics Department project, who first ex-plained to me how the study of meaning can be split between semantics and pragmatics. Semantics is concerned with the resources (vocabulary and a system for calculating phrase- clause- and sentence-meanings).

Semantics of possessive determiners (19) Firemen’s wives worry about their husbands. gives the undesirable consequence that all firemen are married. As to (b), we note that this too gives wrong results in many cases, and that all ei should be used instead.

The empirical study of word meanings and sentence meanings in existing languages is a branch of linguistics; the abstract study of meaning in relation to language or symbolic logic systems is a branch of philosophy. This book takes Korean as a basis to provide a detailed universal Determiner Phrase (DP) structure.

Adnominal adjectival expressions are apparently optional noun dependents but their syntax and semantics have been shown to provide an important window on the internal structure of .
